JUST CALL IN
The lay servant path

From first class to the pulpit.

The United Methodist Church has three levels of lay certification. Each one builds on the one before it, and each starts with a recommendation from Pastor Page and our church council or charge conference.

Start here

Basic Course

The Lay Servant Ministries Basic Course. It's open to anyone who wants to serve, whether or not you go on to certification.

Level 1

Certified Lay Servant

Take the Basic Course and one advanced course. The District Committee on Lay Servant Ministries approves you. You lead prayer and study, assist in worship, and can preach in your local church.

Level 2

Certified Lay Speaker

After Lay Servant, take the Lay Speaker track of study. The Conference committee approves you. You preach when the pastor, district superintendent or committee asks.

Level 3

Certified Lay Minister

After Lay Servant, complete CLM Modules 1–4. You need the district superintendent's recommendation and screening. You can lead worship, provide pastoral care, and start new ministries.

Keeping your certification: Lay Servants renew every year, with an advanced course every three years. Lay Speakers renew every three years. Lay Ministers renew every two years, with continuing education every year.

Called to be a pastor?

Exploring ordained or licensed ministry.

If you sense God calling you to become a pastor (a licensed local pastor, deacon or elder), the Virginia Conference walks with you through candidacy. It starts with a conversation.

First

Talk & read

Talk with Pastor Page about your call, and read The Christian as Minister.

Phase I

Inquiring Candidate

Submit a biographical form, a call statement and a background check authorization. Apply through the district and take the Clergy Ethics course online.

Phase II

Admitted Candidate

Interview with the District Committee on Ordained Ministry. You'll also complete a psychological assessment and medical report, attend the candidacy summit, and meet with a mentor.

Phase III

Licensed or ordained

Licensing School to become a Licensed Local Pastor, or seminary toward provisional membership as a deacon or elder.

Training

Classes near you and online.

Whether you want to teach, lead Bible study, serve with our children, or become a Lay Servant, there's training in person and online. Online courses through BeADisciple.com run about $80–$165 each. Talk with Pastor Page before you register, because the church may be able to help with the cost.
